A Memory of Marco and Polo
Note: The following paragraphs may not be in the most logical order. Each paragraph is numbered; question 438 asks you to choose where Paragraph 3 would most logically be placed.
[1] One sunny and hot afternoon in July when I was 12, I in the backyard of our house, when I spotted two small turtles slowly walking through the were about an inch or so across. They had a hard shell that was green with little yellow stripes. Excitedly, I ran into the house to tell my mother. We came out a few minutes later and found the turtles lounging on some rocks by our garden. They were clearly sunning themselves.
[2] My mom looked the turtles up on her computer. they belonged to a species of turtle called the river cooter. The species rivers and wetlands, and since our house was less than a half mile from the Satilla River, that where they had come from. We read that cooters often could be domesticated as pets to support them. Since we had an aquarium in our house, I begged my mom to let us keep them. She agreed, on the condition that I for taking care of them. I carefully picked the turtles up and carried them to the aquarium.
[3] We had a 100-gallon fish tank in the house. My mother was really into fish. She had neon tetras and knife fish, but her favorite were two red bettas. Lifting up the lid, I gently slipped the turtles into the warm water. They seemed happy and quickly around. They didn’t chase the fish and the fish didn’t seem to mind the turtles. I read some more about my river cooters. I learned that they were herbivorous, which means they ate plants. I took some lettuce from the refrigerator and cut it into little pieces. They were clearly hungry and gobbled it all up.
[4] I named my turtles Marco and Polo. Since I didn’t know if they were male or female, I decided on the names from my favorite swimming pool game. I went to the pet store and got turtle food. I made a basking area out of some bark and floated it on the surface of the water. They loved under the heat lamp. As the summer wore on, Marco and Polo grew, and little pieces of their carapace, or shell, would come off and new shell would replace it.
[5] School began again. I came home every day and fed the turtles. They were growing . I read that the river cooter could measure as much as 13 inches across as an adult. They much too big, even for our enormous fish tank. I went to my mom and we discussed the future for Marco and Polo. There was only one thing to do. Together we put my turtles into a shoebox and walked down to the edge of the river. I put them on a rock. They seemed to look back at me and then quietly slipped into the water.
